About

Optimus is Tesla's internal humanoid robot program, launched at AI Day in August 2021 and championed by CEO Elon Musk. The product has evolved through Gen 1 (2022) and Gen 2 (2023, 11-DoF dexterous hands), with Gen 3 design-frozen in May 2026 and put into formal production at the Fremont factory in August: a 22-DoF tendon-driven dexterous hand (0.08 mm fingertip precision), 50 actuators, 1.73 m tall, 57 kg, 10 hours of endurance and 20 kg max payload; dexterous hand cost is down to about $800, and the AI5 2nm chip was taped out with Samsung. In January 2026 Model S/X production was halted to free up the line; the line was ready in July (40 sub-lines); targets are 1,000 units/week from September and 2,000-2,500 by year-end, with brokers estimating 20,000-30,000 units for the full year; over 1,000 units are already deployed internally for data collection and closed-process work. A second line at Gigafactory Texas will start production in summer 2027, with a long-term goal of 10 million units per year. Tesla is the 'anchor' of the global humanoid robot mass-production timeline; about 70% of its core components come from the Chinese supply chain, with per-unit cost of about $50,000-100,000 (targeting below $20,000 at scale).

Technical Approach

Transfers the full FSD self-driving stack (visual perception, planning, control) to the robot, using vision-based end-to-end neural networks trained at scale on the Dojo supercomputer; sticks to a tendon-driven dexterous hand (22 DoF, hybrid drive with 17 tendons) and adds tactile fingertip sensors; the AI5 2nm chip enables local inference compute; leverages Tesla's vertically integrated manufacturing capability and cost control to advance mass production.
