About

WEILAN was founded in Nanjing in January 2019; founder Liu Weichao holds a master's in AI robotics from the University of Bonn, Germany, and won the RoboCup humanoid international championship three years in a row. The company focuses on building general-purpose robots for families and enterprises; in 2023 it launched BabyAlpha, the world's first home-companion quadruped robot, with cumulative sales breaking 25,000 units and home users at 90% — the world's best-selling consumer quadruped product; cumulative usage exceeds 950 million minutes with over 65 million interactions, forming a real home-scenario data moat. The company proposes a 'general embodied intelligence trilogy': first use quadrupeds to penetrate home scenarios, hone the technology base and cut costs via scaled mass production, then evolve toward humanoid robots. On May 17, 2026 it released the new-generation BabyAlpha A3 with self-developed vision HDR of 140 dB, a Hybrid X1 heterogeneous compute cluster of 6 domestic chips and an on-device 7B-parameter model — 1,000x the compute of the previous generation at about 1/10 the cost of comparable NVIDIA solutions — expected on sale in Q3. It completed an over-RMB 100M A1 round in August 2023, built China's first quadruped robot mass-production factory in 2022, and self-develops and self-produces all key components.

Technical Approach

Advances by the 'general embodied intelligence trilogy': first penetrate home scenarios with quadrupeds, hone the technology base and cut costs through scaled mass production, then use that as a springboard toward humanoid robots. Insists on in-house algorithm and model architectures + heterogeneous computing: the BabyAlpha A3 achieves a 1,000x compute gain with a heterogeneous cluster of 6 domestic chips at about 1/10 the cost of comparable NVIDIA solutions. Its self-developed five-layer motion control algorithms once broke the foreign world record for quadruped running speed.

Commercialization(6)

  • BabyAlpha series cumulative sales broke 25,000 units, with home users at a high of 90% — the world's best-selling consumer quadruped product (source: Jiemian News, 2026-05-18)
  • Cumulative usage over 950 million minutes and interactions breaking 65 million, all from real home environments (source: China Daily, 2026-05-19)
  • Placed a 60,000-unit robot dog order with Jiangsu Leili at end-2024, demonstrating scaled production capability
  • Opened China's first consumer embodied AI retail store at Nanjing Deji Plaza (2024)
  • Runs a dual-track 'Robot as a Service' (RaaS) and product retail model, bringing embodied AI to thousands of households
  • BabyAlpha is priced under RMB 10,000, bringing the 'thinking smart terminal' into a price band ordinary families can afford

Position & Strengths(5)

  • Global consumer quadruped sales champion: 25,000 units sold with 90% home users, while most industry players remain at the demo stage
  • Cost advantage: BabyAlpha A3 achieves 'higher compute at about 1/10 cost' with a domestic heterogeneous compute solution, removing dependence on NVIDIA
  • Academic pedigree: the founder studied under a Leibniz Prize laureate and is a schoolmate of autonomous-driving father Thrun
  • Owned supply chain: all key components self-developed and self-produced; mass-production factory + experience stores + Agent OS form a full-chain capability
  • Data moat: 950 million minutes of real home usage and 65 million interactions form a product-iteration data barrier
